"Through the Eyes of Our Children" presents photographs made by students from five schools in the South Dallas/Fair Park area of the Dallas Independent School District. Inspired to follow personal journeys of discovery through their photographs, these students convey their perceptions and ideas about the neighborhoods - and even the broader community - in which they live. Students from Charles Rice Learning Center, Joseph J. Rhoads Learning Center, H. S. Thompson Learning Center, Pearl C. Anderson Middle Learning Center, and Paul L. Dunbar Learning Center participated in a Preservation LINK, Inc. arts-in-education program called POINT OF VIEW. This three-tier exploratory course is designed to use literacy, art, and technology education to empower young people as they explore and express thoughts and feelings about themselves, their community, and their world. Instructed by photographer David Herman, Jr., over sixty students ranging in age from ten to thirteen participated in the twelve-week curriculum focused on developing and discovering new ways to view their community. POINT OF VIEW is sponsored by Preservation LINK, Inc. (PLI). Through various arts-in-education programs, PLI (preservationlink.org) employs the innovation of partners and supervision of program instructors with the goal of preparing children/families/communities with life skills that will allow them to explore and embrace the opportunities and possibilities of themselves and the world around them. Preservation LINK Inc.'s mission is to encourage an appreciation and an acknowledgment of community and culture through literacy, art, and technology education.
