Vasari Award Selection Criteria and Nomination Guidelines

Selection Criteria

Originality and depth of scholarship

Significance to the literature of art history generally and in the particular subject field

Clarity and skill of written expression

Quality of book production and visual presentation of material

Nominee(s) must be primarily responsible for the intellectual content of the work (over 50% must be by author working in Texas)

Basic surveys and general treatments of subjects are not applicable

The award was originally intended for art historians; however, primary consideration was given to the significance of the contribution to the literature of art history and closely related disciplines such as architecture.

Nomination Guidelines

Between January 1 and March 1 of each year, the Mildred R. and Frederick M. Mayer Library of the Dallas Museum of Art invited nominations for its Vasari Award, presented annually to an art historian living in Texas. Each year, the award was given for publications with an imprint of the preceding year and was generally presented to the author at a reception later in the year. In later years, the award recipient was asked to deliver a lecture on the topic of the winning publication.

While the intent of the award was to highlight a book-length publication by one author, we accepted nominations for which the author was responsible for over 50% of the intellectual content of the work.

If you have questions concerning the history of the award, please contact the Director of Libraries and Imaging Services.

The Dallas Museum of Art is supported in part by the generosity of Museum members and donors and by the citizens of Dallas through the City of Dallas/Office of Cultural Affairs and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
