Statement regarding the death of Edward Larrabee Barnes

The Dallas Museum of Art is saddened by the death of the distinguished American architect Edward Larrabee Barnes, designer of the Museum’s new building that opened in 1984 and the Hamon expansion that added to it in 1993.

“Edward Larrabee Barnes will be remembered in Dallas for the integrity of design and the enduring grace and efficacy of his building for the Dallas Museum of Art, the original anchor of the now burgeoning Dallas Arts District. His work greatly impacted the advancement of artistic and architectural culture in the city,” said John R. Lane, The Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art.

Dr. Lane, who knew Mr. Barnes for 25 years, also served as director of the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, which houses the Sarah Scaife Galleries. The galleries were designed by the respected architect.
