to Host Grant Hill Family Day

Family can enjoy activities and art exploration with Arturo and his friends on April 2

DALLAS, March 24, 2005 – To celebrate Something All Our Own: The Grant Hill Collection of African American Art, the Dallas Museum of Art invites families to the April 2 Grant Hill Family Day for hands-on art activities, demonstrations by real artists and all-around fun with an NBA basketball theme from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Here’s the don’t-miss list for Saturday, April 2.

  1. Mingle with the famous Family Programs mascot, Arturo, in the Gateway Gallery.
  2. Explore the creative process in an exciting family film, I Can Fly: Kids and Creativity, featuring Elizabeth Catlett, an artist whose works are in the Grant Hill exhibition. Orientation Theater 2 p.m. (25 minutes, recommended for ages 5–15)
  3. Win prizes and have fun with disc jockey Jay Jenson at the Radio Disney booth.
  4. Kids can discover their artistic side and learn from an expert during John Coleman’s artist demonstration. Afterward, attendees can compare their work with Coleman’s in the Tower Gallery on Level 4.
  5. Young artists can switch gears in the South Studio of Gateway Gallery by showing off their free-throw skills to win a prize.
  6. Children can create a personalized collage inspired by the art of Romare Bearden, whose work Soul Three is in the Museum’s permanent collection.
  7. Families can stop for a snack and order from the kids’ menu in the Atrium Cafe.
  8. Kids can see how tall they are and how they measure up against NBA All-Star Grant Hill in the North Studio entrance, Gateway Gallery.
  9. Take the interactive family audio tour with Arturo as the guide through European painting and sculpture, contemporary art, the Sculpture Garden, and the arts of Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands.
  10. And finally, kids can get a tattoo of Arturo.

The DMA charges a general admission fee of $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for students with current school identification. Members and children under 12 are free.

Family Initiatives are funded by Catherine and Will Rose. New family learning experiences are supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
