Go back in time to the Harlem Renaissance with music, dance performances, tours, films, and more! Join noted African American art historian Richard Powell as he discusses the Harlem Renaissance during the 1920s and then explore the exhibition Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties.

Pick up your free tickets at the Will Call table beginning at 6:00 p.m. Following the program there will be a book signing outside the Museum Store.
Discover two exciting new voices in contemporary literature. Ben Fountain’s new novel, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, is a razor sharp satire about a young, reluctant Iraq War hero, home on leave, who finds himself the guest of honor at a Dallas Cowboys football game. Alexander Maksik’s first novel, You Deserve Nothing, is a gripping story of power, idealism, and morality and was featured in Publishers Weekly as one of ten promising debuts.

Join guest performance artist Harold Steward in an interactive Image Theater workshop. Based on the new Community Partner Response Installation Free Association by The South Dallas Cultural Center, use nonverbal expressions to explore issues of oppression.

Dr. Richard Powell, the John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art & Art History at Duke University, surveys the range of "New Negro" representations that appeared during the era of the Harlem Renaissance in painting, sculpture, photography, and film, from sheiks to flappers, and from Paul Robeson to Josephine Baker.

Exit 380 has been performing alternative rock in North Texas for over eleven years. The Dallas Morning News stated that their latest release, Townies, “fit beautifully in the current roots-driven, hand-harvested national indie rock scene.”

Showcasing some of the greatest Harlem Renaissance musicians and actors, Stormy Weather follows Bill Williamson, a soldier just returned from World War I, as he searches for stardom as a performer and meets the lovely singer Selina Rogers, promising to return to her when he “gets to be somebody.” Years pass as their careers rise, intersecting only briefly, and Selina refuses to “settle down.” Will she ever change her mind? Featuring Lena Horne, Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway, and Katherine Dunham. This film is not rated (74 min).
